Selfridges Haul!

It's that time of year, the time for a splurge. I've got a little money and a long list of things that I want. I think that actually, I was quite restrained this time. I went to Selfridges in the Trafford Centre (I'm lucky enough to live fairly close) and I wanted to share with you the things that I bought, and give you a little 'First Impressions'.

First on the list in NARS 'Radiant Creamy Concealer' in Chantilly. It's actually a pretty good match for my skin. The girl at the counter said it was a little lighter but I had foundation on too, without the foundation it matches my under eye area (that isn't purple) pretty well.

The packaging is lovely. People complain about how the rubbery texture of the packaging (on this it's the lid/applicator handle) because it gets dirty. Actually it rubs clean pretty easily and I love the feeling of it. I have a couple of book covers and hair brush that feel the same and I love it. It's so soft :).

The formulation is super creamy and the doe-foot applicator picks up exactly the right amount of product. It blends beautifully and covers a multitude of imperfections. I'll be doing a blog post next week solely about this product so keep your eyes peeled.

Next I got a few things from MAC. I got a lip pencil and three lipsticks. The lip pencil I got is 'Hip 'n' Happy'.

The colour is really light but on my pale face it doesn't look so light. It'll be a nice addition to any pale lip look.

I find the texture of this much softer and smoother than my other lip pencils. It's really creamy and soft and applies lovely.

I also got my hands on three Lipsticks. I talk through them individually.

First I got hold of Angel. Angel is a 'Frost' finish Lipstick. It's a pale colour but again, on me it doesn't look too light. It's only slightly lighter than my natural lip colour.

You can see here, it looks very soft and velvety on the lips and is quite natural.

The next one I got is Syrup. Syrup is a 'Lustre' finish Lipstick and is darker than the last, but is only slightly darker than my lip colour. Plus, because it is slightly darker it makes my teeth look whiter! :)

This one is much shinier and more glossy. It feels very soft on the lips and is, by far, my favourite of the three.

Lastly I picked up Brave. This is a 'Satin' finish Lipstick. The texture of this is much more Matte than the other two, however it is nowhere near as drying as the Matte Lipsticks.

The colour again is darker than the last but still looks neutral enough. It's similar in its darkness to Whirl Lip Pencil, but it's a lot more pink than brown. It's perfect for those of us who are so pale that Whirl just looks dark brown, but still want to achieve that 'look'.

Last of all I picked up a bottle of Illamasqua Skin Base. I've been after this for a while, purely because of the range of colours that they offer. I struggle to find foundation that matches my skin because it's so pale. Mac NC15 was my go-to for so long but even that was simply too dark. I went to the counter and asked them to match my skin to a shade and came out with SB03 which is the lightest yellow-toned shade that they produce. The foundation itself is very light, it's a light to medium coverage but is buildable if you would like a heavier base. Personally I don't like wearing much on my skin so one layer of this is perfect. (Tip: Use with Illamasqua Hydra Veil, it compliments the product and keeps the skin looking dewy).

You can see on the picture below the difference between Mac's Studio Fix Fluid in NC15 and Illamasqua Skin Base in 03. The Skin base is clearly much lighter.

All in all I'm very satisfied with my purchases :) I'm happy that I finally have foundation and concealer that don't make me look too dark, and some new lipsticks to keep me going :)

Have you tried any of these products? And did you love or hate them? Let me know in the comments :)

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in 'Ash Brown'. Review and Mini How-To.

(A quick reminder; you still have a week left to enter my giveaway to win a MAC Lipstick here)

Anyway, as someone who loves a strong brow I've been searching for something that's right for me. I have very ashy tones in my hair and especially my eyebrows and so it's been very difficult to find a shade for my brows that isn't too warm toned, because they tend to look very red.

In the end Anastasia Beverly Hills seemed the way to go, due to their dedication to providing the correct colour for an array of skin and hair tones. They specialise in brow products and I was eager to give their shade 'Ash Brown' a try, and see if it really was the right product for me. (Side note, you're unlikely to find anywhere in the UK that sells this product in-store so as to colour match. I ordered this from Cult Beauty and pretty much had to guess my shade.)

Most other eyebrow products are only available in light, medium, and dark and that's all. For example I was using Benefit's 'Brow Zings' in Dark. The depth of colour was great, but unfortunately the shade was very red and only appropriate for warm toned hair. You can see in the picture below the two products in comparison to one another.

As it turns out the colour is a perfect match. It's slightly lighter than my hair and eyebrows, but that was intentional due to my pale skin and not wanting to look like I have slugs on my forehead. But it blends in perfectly and looks just right.

The product itself comes in a cute little black box with rose gold detailing which I love. I'm one of those people who, if a product's outer packaging is really nice I keep putting it back in the box when I've used it. That is, until the box becomes all tatty which usually happens quite rapidly thanks to my disorganised mess of a makeup bag.

The actual product comes in a little glass pot and is 4g. It's actually bigger than I expected and you hardly have to use any product on your brush so this is going to last ages! It has the little logo on top in rose gold also.

As you can tell from this picture again the colour is very ashy toned. I took the picture here before I used any of the product and I was so desperate to try it out!

The consistency of the product is slightly moussey but slightly gel-like too. I use a small angled eyebrow brush and wipe either side of the brush into the product, rather than dipping it in because I don't want to end up with clumps and waste it. The pomade glides on the skin so smoothly and is really easy to blend out. If you make a mistake there is time before it dries completely to neaten up but once it has dried it stays put all day and that, I think is the best part. Sometimes, like a bit of an idiot I forget that I'm wearing makeup and just rub my face. I'm sure we've all done it. I was wearing this on Saturday and I had an itch and just rubbed my eyebrow and panicked that I'd smudged it (because I was out without my mirror!) and as it turns out the stuff hadn't budged, at all.

I'm so pleased with this purchase and I would definitely recommend trying to get hold of some of this if you've struggled to find a colour that is right for you, because there is a choice of 11 shades on Cult Beauty and there's bound to be one to suit you. If you're having trouble here's their guide.

Mini how-to

I'm just going to quickly run through the steps of how I apply the Dipbrow Pomade as a mini how-to.

Step 1.
Draw a line with your brush along the top of your eyebrow or where you want the top of your eyebrow to be.

Step 2.
Do the same but along the bottom of the eyebrow or where you'd like the bottom to be.

Step 3.
Continue the lines to the outer edge of the eyebrow bringing them to a point where your eyebrows finish or again, where you'd like them to finish.

Step 4.
Fill in the outer edge with product stopping about halfway in to the brow.

Step 5.
Blend out the upper and lower lines into the centre of the brow, preferably not adding any more product to the brush as you don't want them to end up too dark!

And voilĂ . One brow done. I left the other blank and did so too with the eye makeup just so you can gauge how different they look before and after.

What brow products do you swear by? And have you tried any of the Anastasia Beverly Hills products before? If so let me know in the comments :)

5 Shows to Watch on Netflix.

Just a reminder, there's still 2 weeks left to enter my Giveaway to win a MAC Lipstick. Click here to open the giveaway in a new window.

Anyway, on with this post. It's been 2 weeks since I've posted anything, and I feel immeasurable guilt. However that is nothing compared to the guilt I would feel if I didn't write my dissertation instead. Being a third year is hard.

To get me through all the assignment writing and reference finding and just general 'Oh my god I have a month and a half left and I don't know what I'm doing with my life' panic, I like to watch Netflix. It helps take my mind off the stress and the anxiety by occupying me with story lines and plots etc. So, I decided to tell you guys which are my favourite tv shows on there, and why, so as to recommend them if you're looking for something new :)

1. Pretty Little Liars.

This show is life. I actually am only just at the beginning of S3, and I've got a way to go but, this show is incredible. I've even got my Mum (who barely get in to tv shows that aren't police dramas and/or real crime) in to this. We started watching a couple of months ago now and we're totally hooked! The show follows a group of four girls, who used to be five, trying to figure out how to deal with the murder of one of the group and also how to deal with a stalker who barrages them with texts, emails, and who interferes with their families and relationships. The show itself tackles issues like murder, suicide, bullying, stalking, harassment, lies, and an array of different problems teenagers may come across.

The show had me hooked from the first episode and I honestly can't believe I've never watched it before. I'd give Pretty Little Liars 10/10. Would definitely recommend.

2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Buffy is my all-time favourite show. I actually own the box set on DVD but, they're all on Netflix and they're so good. Most people know the general concept of Buffy, she's a young girl, and a vampire slayer, and has to navigate teenage life with a few demons mixed in. The story arcs are stellar and the characters are relatable. I thought that with it being 15 years old, it wouldn't have the same impact today as it did then, but I only watched it for the first time about 2 years ago and it was brilliant then.

I would give Buffy a 10/10. Best. Show. Ever.

3. Once upon a Time.

I originally watched this show back in 2011 when they showed the first series on TV. I watched the second series the following year, but then Channel 5 dropped the show and I was left, Once-upon-a-Time-less. This show hasn't been on Netflix for long, I've been looking for it for a really long time and now it's there I'm very excited to be watching it again. To sum up the premise, there's a town full of people who are all fairy tale characters trapped, they don't know who they are, but there's a little boy who's trying to show them. There's characters from all your favourite classic fairy tales like Snow White, Prince Charming, and a few bad guys too. Its got twists and turns and is definitely one that you could spend a whole day watching and not know where the time went!

For Once upon a Time, 9.5/10.

4. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

This show is a Netflix Original Series, and a sparky comedy brought to us by SNL and 30 Rock writers Robert Carlock and Tina Fey. I'm a huge Tina Fey fan, and their previous work is so funny, so I though this was one I had to watch. There are only 13 episodes so far, and they're only around 23-25 minutes each, so not too overwhelming. They could easily be watched in between slots of writing or working on anything you're busy doing, and they offer a light break. Kimmy is a woman who was rescued from an underground apocalyptic cult, after being below ground for 15 years. The show follows her hilarious antics whilst trying to 'make it' in NYC. She meets an array of colourful characters who all bring their own type of humour to the table and it's just a great and funny show.

I'd give Kimmy Schmidt a 9/10.

5. Orange is the New Black.

Okay so everyone has heard of this show. Another Netflix Original Series, OITNB enters around Piper, a seemingly average woman with a checkered past. As it turns out she once trafficked drugs for a huge drug dealer 10 years ago, and now she's paying the price. She gets sentenced to one year in a women's prison and the show is about how she deals with the prison experience, leaving behind her friends and family, and meeting a band of new people in the prison, all of whom have their own stories to tell. The show is great if you don't mind profane language and the occasional lesbian sex scene.

Overal I'd give Orange is the New Black 8.5/10.

Are there any shows that you love on Netflix that I haven't mentioned? Let me know in the comments, I love taking new recommendations. Also, let me know if you've watched these and loved or hated them :)
